Natural soil is alive. The life cycle involves a whole host of microorganisms who live on the organic duff dropped from the plants above. The soil fauna become the actual food the plant roots use to manifest themselves. A very neat little cycle. The beauty of these systems is that they go on without humans. The only thing we need to do is watch and by way of utilizing the understanding garnered by watching, tweak the arrangement of plants and water courses to form landscapes from which we can eat, sleep and otherwise enjoy the show.
